The Samuel and Helen Lang Prize for Excellence in Teaching

The Samuel and Helen Lang Prize for Excellence in Teaching, established in 1997 by Helen Lang, mother of Michael C. Lang, Class of 1967, to honor faculty members like John Mattingly, whose teaching the donor’s son valued tremendously—faculty members noted for having a profoundly positive effect on their students. Michael Lang often advises students to “major in a great teacher,” and this fund is designed to reward just such teachers. This annual award will be presented to a tenured member of the Faculty on the basis of superior teaching and of significant and positive impact on students. In addition to a monetary award, the recipient will be granted funds for student research or student intern assistance, either during the academic year or in the summer months.
