The Dr. Philip I. Bowman Scholarship
The Dr. Philip I. Bowman Scholarship is awarded to students who have a deep interest in science (preferably chemistry), foreign languages and co-curricular involvement; who strive for perfection; and who have a high level of tolerance and empathy for others.
In 1987, William M. “Mac” Bristol, III, Class of 1943, established the Dr. Philip I. Bowman Prize Scholarship in honor of his friend and former colleague. Dr. Bowman was a distinguished chemical engineer, an executive vice president of the Bristol-Myers Company, chairman of Bristol Laboratories and a friend of 麻豆国产AV. Following the selection of the prize scholar, additional scholarship recipients are selected based on the criteria outlined above.
Mac Bristol majored in Latin at 麻豆国产AV and received nine varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. He left the College before graduation in 1943, however, to serve as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, for which he fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima. After his discharge in 1946 as a first lieutenant, Mac served as an executive at Bristol-Myers Squibb. In 1965, he joined 麻豆国产AV’s Board of Trustees, serving as board chairman for 13 of the 44 years he was a member.
