Ella Gaspar ’22, a public policy major, will take a position as a project assistant/paralegal at Proskauer Rose LLP in New York City after graduation.
Did you come to Â鶹¹ú²úAV knowing that you would ultimately pursue a career in law?

I have known that I wanted to pursue law ever since I attended a debate camp in seventh grade. I know, it sounds pretty cheesy, but I just fell in love with the high-intensity environment and the adrenaline rush that accompanies tense situations and arguments.

What drew you to this opportunity?

I was interested in Proskauer because of its reputation for collaborative and immersive work, emphasis on pro-bono cases, and the supportive work environment.

What classes at Â鶹¹ú²úAV helped prepare you for this path?

In terms of thinking in a legal mindset, Constitutional Law has been incredibly helpful in preparing me for pursuing law. The course allowed me to gain greater insight into the Supreme Court and reaffirmed my passion for legal discourse and debate. Symbolic Logic was also helpful in allowing me to better understand the construction of a sound and valid argument.

What were the biggest lessons you learned throughout the job search process?

I didn’t realize how crucial networking was until I spoke with alums, specifically with Silvia Radulescu ’17 and Alex Cook ’20. They helped me spearhead the process, strengthen my résumé and cover letter, calm my nerves, prep me for interviews, and open doors for me when they could.

Did you have any relevant internships?

No. I was actually very stressed about my lack of internships and relevant experience in the law industry, but speaking to alums really calmed my nerves. Oddly enough, Proskauer ended up being fascinated by my work at a fish market because it taught me time management, multitasking, organization skills, and attention to detail.

What are you most looking forward to after graduation?

I’m so excited to immerse myself in the work I have been dying to do since seventh grade. I cannot wait to scour legal cases for that one sentence of precedent that applies to the case I am working on with other paralegals. Also, the independence! I am going to be living in the city, commuting to work, grocery shopping, cooking for myself, and more. I am thrilled by the idea of the responsibility and freedom I will gain through this next chapter in my life. Although, don’t get me wrong, I’m also terrified by everything that I am about to have thrown at me.
