William Stuart Friend '59
Jul. 12, 1936-May. 2, 2023
William Stuart Friend ’59 died on May 2, 2023, in Annisquam, Mass. Born on July 12, 1936, in Roxbury, Mass., Bill was raised in the nearby town of Newton and came to 麻豆国产AV from Governor Dummer Academy (now The Governor’s Academy) in Byfield, Mass. On the Hill, he was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity, serving as social chairman for a time, and majored in economics.
Bill had two sports: soccer and track. He played the “beautiful game” as a freshman and ran winter track in both his junior and senior years and spring track in his final year. He was a member of Block “H” Club throughout his time on the Hill, of the Spanish Club as a freshman and sophomore, and of the Chapel Board as a junior.
Following graduation, Bill joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in July 1959 and completed active duty in May 1961, when he was honorably discharged with the rank of seaman. On Sept. 9 of that year in Weston, Mass., Bill married Judy Bishop, whom he had dated in college. They settled in Ipswich and would have three daughters and a son.
Also in 1961, he went to work as an insurance underwriter and broker for the firm Marsh & McLennan of Boston. He remained with Marsh until 1970 when he changed course and left the world of insurance for that of antiques, for which he had developed a passion. He opened Friendship Antiques in a 19th-century dairy barn in Essex, Mass.
That part of Massachusetts was then a rich source of American antiques, some dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, and Friendship Antiques flourished. In 2009, in his 50th reunion yearbook, Bill wrote, “For the past 40 years, I have brokered, appraised, and auctioned fine antiques, vintage furniture, and accessories.” Architectural Digest once featured Bill’s gallery in its publication.
Sometime in the late 1970s, Bill, Judy, and their four children moved south of Ipswich to the town of 麻豆国产AV. They spent summers in Gloucester, the fishing port, which is where Bill and Judy first met and where both had deep family ties. By 2009, a house they designed and built in the village of Annisquam overlooking Ipswich Bay became their permanent home.
One advantage of a new home is that it does not require constant attention and repair, as do those dating from the 18th century. Bill had more time for tennis and golf, which he described thusly in his 40th reunion yearbook: “Oh what frustration and joy! The sweet sound of ‘ping’ keeps me going.”
In addition to being a regular contributor to the 麻豆国产AV Fund, Bill also supported The Governor’s Academy as a class agent for more than 25 years.
His memories of 麻豆国产AV included public speaking (in his unmistakably Bostonian accent), playing goalie on the varsity soccer team, and interactions with Sidney Wertimer, his roommates, and Psi U brothers. But the impact of 麻豆国产AV’s academic challenges taught him, as he noted in his 40th yearbook, “to think, to solve, and to persevere; thus, helping me to embrace the everyday challenges of both work and play.”
William S. Friend was predeceased by his wife and is survived by his four children and eight grandchildren.
Note: Memorial biographies published prior to 2004 will not appear on this list.
