Patrick Michael Stellato '64

Oct. 4, 1942-Jun. 12, 2022

Patrick Michael Stellato ’64 died on June 12, 2022, in Delmar, N.Y. Born in Rome, N.Y., on Oct. 4, 1942, he came to 麻豆国产AV from the Rome Free Academy in the fall of 1959 as a member of the Class of 1963. Initially contemplating a career in medicine, Pat subsequently changed his major to English literature. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity for a period of time but later left it and became an Independent.  Personal circumstances led to his withdrawing from the College early in the spring of his junior year.  He returned in the fall of 1963, completed his degree, and graduated with the Class of 1964.

From 麻豆国产AV, Pat proceeded to Tulane University in New Orleans to pursue graduate studies in English; he continued through the summer of 1970 but no graduate degree was ever conferred. Between 1965 and 1967, he was an instructor in the English Department at Dillard University in New Orleans. It was in this period that he met a fellow graduate student in English, Mary Neal Taylor, and they were married on Sept. 17, 1966. She was originally from Northport, Ala. They had one daughter.

In the fall of 1970, he and Mary left academia and made their way to Boulder Creek, Calif., in the Santa Cruz Mountains, at a time when it was regarded as “a counterculture haven.” While in Boulder Creek, whatever else he did, Pat played in rock ‘n’ roll bands.

It was also a period during which, it seems, he was undergoing a personal transition, as he changed course again. His marriage to Mary ended in 1975, and he left California to attend the University of Buffalo School of Law, where he completed his Juris Doctor in 1978. He then joined the staff of the Office of the New York Attorney General in Albany, moving to Delmar in 1979. He would work there until his retirement in 2014.

In 1988, he met Candice Carroll Burnell. They married in 1992.

In retirement, Pat sang in the choir of his local parish church, St. Thomas the Apostle, for more than 12 years. He also performed with the Jubilate Singers, a choir affiliated with Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Delmar. He volunteered weekly at the Sister Maureen Joyce Food Pantry and delivered medicine to and visited those confined to their homes as a volunteer for community hospice. Pat liked to cook, travel — Italy was a favorite destination — play bridge and poker, hike, ski cross-country, and do the daily New York Times crossword puzzle.

Patrick M. Stellato is survived by his wife and daughter.
