1979 Bell Ringer Award
Citation for Frederic S. Marquardt ’27

His distinguished career as a journalist of international renown spans more than half a century, stretching from 1927, when he first joined the Utica Daily Press, to the present, which sees him as senior editor of The Arizona Republic.

In the years that intervened, he traveled extensively throughout the world on assignments, acquiring the insight so invaluable to any journalist. Born in Manila, he returned to his native Philippines in 1928 as associate editor for the Philippines Free Press. He has also held various editorial positions for the Phoenix Gazette, the Chicago Sun, and its successor, the Sun-Times.

A World War II post as Chief of the Office of War Information in the southwest Pacific brought him in close contact with General Douglas MacArthur. So meaningful was their relationship, in fact, that MacArthur attended a New York citation dinner given in honor of his former subordinate- an unusual gesture of friendship.

Currently a Phoenix resident, Mr. Marquardt remains active in a number of local organizations, among them the Rotary Club, the Presbyterian Church, the Phoenix Press Club, and the National Conference of Editorial Writers. He has also served as past president of the Arizona Blue Cross, the Phoenix Heard Museum and the St. Joseph’s Hospital Advisory Board.

No cause, however, holds a greater claim to his attentions than his alma mater. Whether as a frequent visitor to the Hill, or as an advocate for the College in the southwestern United States, he has always shown himself a loyal son. He and his brothers, the late Marshall and Hollister, constitute one of Â鶹¹ú²úAV’s most dedicated families.

For his work in the community, in the nation, and in the world, therefore, through which he has honorably furthered the reputation of this College, Â鶹¹ú²úAV is proud to salute this distinguished alumnus for the many and varied accomplishments of his life.
